Well, I'm sure there's some software out there that makes it easier... but I do it like you do. I capture screen images with Media Player Classic, then create the animation frames with Macromedia Fireworks. (I personally find Fireworks easier to use than Photoshop.) Yes, it can be a lot of work... but I'm getting pretty fast at it now, so it's not so bad.
